Warhammer Meets Glowforge: A Maker's Success Story

For one maker, Glowforge became the launching pad for an unexpected business venture.

For the uninitiated, Warhammer is a rich and immersive tabletop wargaming experience where players command armies of miniature models in epic battles. It's a hobby that combines strategy, creativity, and community.

Introducing Kaleb Walters

He's a Warhammer enthusiast who's been commanding fantasy armies since he was 18. Like many tabletop gamers, he found himself regularly purchasing accessories to enhance his gaming experience. That's when he had an idea: why not make his own?

"I picked up my first Glowforge years ago with zero experience in lasers, cutting, or engraving," Kaleb explains. "Honestly, I just thought it would be cool to stop buying tokens for my hobby and start making my own."

Despite initial intimidation, Kaleb quickly found his footing. What started with basic cuts and simple engraved words soon evolved into sophisticated gaming accessories. His fellow players took notice, and the requests started rolling in.

"After just my second version of a scoreboard, someone asked me to make one for them — and from there, things took off."

Today, Kaleb crafts everything from scoreboards to measuring sticks, creating custom gear for gaming groups across the country.

One of his signature creations, which he calls "Gentleman Sticks," exemplifies the premium quality of his work. These measuring tools, essential for tactical gameplay, are crafted from walnut wood surrounded by matte black acrylic with a felt backing and bring a touch of elegance to the gaming table.

While maintaining his full-time job, Kaleb's Glowforge creations have become a successful side business, helping him travel, pay down debt, and invest in new equipment. But perhaps the most rewarding moment? "Going to a Warhammer tournament and seeing a third of the room using something I built with Glowforge," he says with pride.

His creativity extends beyond just gaming accessories. For a special holiday-themed tournament at Adepticon in Milwaukee, Kaleb used his Glowforge to create an elaborate display board featuring festive engravings. He's even incorporated the technology into model decoration, such as his American-themed Kragnos figure featuring precisely engraved patriotic details.
