Paper might be the most versatile material you'll use with your Glowforge — and the possibilities are anything but flat!

In his comprehensive video “Every Laserable Material”, Glowforge owner John K. shows us how laser cutting transforms ordinary paper into extraordinary art — and we're here to expand on his paper-crafting insights.

Let’s dive in!

Getting Started

From basic copy paper to specialty cardstock, paper might be the most accessible material for your Glowforge projects. The pre-set settings for standard 20 lb copy paper make getting started a breeze, ensuring clean cuts and precise engravings from your very first project. You can find them right in the Glowforge App!

What makes paper such a versatile material for laser projects?

First, there's the incredible variety — copy paper, craft paper, cardstock, and even corrugated cardboard all work beautifully with your Glowforge. The laser's precision allows for impossibly intricate cuts that would be difficult to achieve by hand, while the engraving capabilities add depth and texture to your designs.

As with all materials, it's best to stay with your Glowforge while it's working its magic — especially when crafting with paper and cardboard. Different papers can have varying compositions, so keeping an eye on your print ensures the best results.

Tips and Tricks for Creating with Paper:

Ready to elevate your paper crafting game? Here are 3 ways your Glowforge really shines:

  1. Create designs that would be impossible with scissors! Your Glowforge can cut incredibly detailed patterns into paper of all weights. From delicate lace-like patterns to precise geometric shapes, the possibilities are endless!
  1. Try combining paper types or adding paper to other materials to make some creative projects! We like layering different colors and weights of paper; combining paper with other materials like MDF; using specialty papers for unique effects; or adding engraved details to cut designs.
  1. Give those shipping boxes new life! Laser cutting and engraving cardboard is a great way to prototype your next project before using your final materials.
