Looking to prototype designs? MDF might be for you.

In his comprehensive video “Every Laserable Material” Glowforge owner John K. walks us through the versatility of MDF — and we're here to expand on his insights.

Let’s dive in!

Getting Started with Proofgrade® Draftboard®

Glowforge's Proofgrade Draftboard is specially engineered MDF that takes the guesswork out of settings and ensures consistent results. It's perfect for:

  • Testing designs before using premium materials
  • Creating templates and prototypes
  • Learning how different settings affect your cuts and engravings
  • Practicing new techniques

Looking to work with specific wood variants like Plywood or Veneer? We’ve got Material Deep Dives on both! Check out our Wood blog and Veneer blog for all the info.

Creative Project Ideas

The versatility of MDF opens up a world of creative possibilities! Here are just a few ways to put this affordable material to work:

  • Painted signs with elegant textured backgrounds
  • Prototype designs for client approval before using premium materials
  • Vibrant sublimated photo gifts and keepsakes
  • Custom game pieces with professional-looking painted finishes
  • Eye-catching home décor with layered designs
  • Precise templates and jigs for your workshop

Tips and Tricks for Creating with MDF:

Painting:

  • Start by applying two coats of automotive filler primer before painting
  • Follow with 2-3 coats of spray paint
  • Add a finish coat for protection!
  • You could also engrave shallow patterns onto your MDF, and then follow the painting steps above. You’ll get a really cool texture! (See John’s video for a great example of this).

Sublimation:

Want to combine laser cutting with photo transfers? Try sublimation board — a special type of MDF with a coated surface. First, print your design using a sublimation printer (or converted Epson printer), then use a heat press tool like a Cricut EasyPress to transfer the image onto your laser-cut pieces. It's a perfect combination of techniques that lets you create full-color designs on precisely cut shapes!

Safety First

Because MDF is an engineered wood product, it creates fine particles during the cutting process that require good ventilation — we strongly recommend venting outside rather than using an air filter.

You'll also need to clean your machine more frequently when working with MDF, as these particles can build up inside your laser. Because of this, MDF isn't recommended for use with Glowforge Aura or Spark. If you're using these models, we recommend sticking with natural hardwoods, acrylics, fabrics, or paper for the best results and longest life of your machine.
