For your entertainment, I would like to present the Apocalypse Cube.

The cube is 6 sides of 1/4 mdf (5.5 inches per side). I beveled the edges with a hand plane and a shooting board (see video at the bottom of the post).

The sides were spray painted with a turquoise glitter paint, two sealing coats of clear and then a coat of black paint.

I then lasered a fractal design over the six sides, so it would continually wrap around the cube in most directions. The glitter paint gives the cube a sand-stone like texture and sparkles quite a bit more in person than in the photos.

I also lasered up some corner pieces since MDF is not the best at holding glue joints on edges. I have simplified my design a bit since this photo, but it really helped with assembly.

Oh… the cube also glows in the dark, because it really should. :grinning:

The glow is courtesy of a coat of rustolium glow paint over the black (pre-lasering).

The 45 degree miters for this cube were done old school with hand plane and a shooting board:

It’s surprisingly quick with thin stock and a great way to get mitered corners with limited shop space.

The fractal image was generated in Frax for iOS. Feel free to fiddle with it as you like (right click and save as):
