Overview

In this activity, students can show their school spirit by designing an ornament based on their school mascot or logo. Finished ornament can be sold at school events for fundraising!

Objective

Thematic Questions:

· How can we convert our school spirit into a tangible product? · What designs best translate to a printable design? · What challenges do we forsee when designing the ornament? (negative space, scale, fragility)

Outcomes

Students will...

· design/trace school mascot or logo · troubleshoot for design issues (making sure the print is one solid piece) · market their product, developing a price range and income estimate.

Supplies

For each ornament you will need:

  • Proofgrade Medium Hardwood (cardboard may be used if not selling ornaments)
  • Jump rings
  • Chain or ribbon
  • Copy of school logo or mascot
  • Pencil
  • Paper
  • Pliers

Lesson Outline:

Block one:

  • Read through the activity and review all steps for completing the activity.
  • Students may trace school logo or design their own design.
  • Have the students make a copy of their design, and fully color in the printable space, checking that no important elements will drop out or fall away once the design is printed.
  • Convert designs to .svg, adding holes where chain/ribbon will thread through.

Block Two:

  • Print out each design, one for each student in addition to ornaments to be sold.
  • Have students attach jumprings and chain/ribbon.
  • Students can now brainstorm an appropriate price for the ornaments, and have them calculate the total potential fundrasing income.
