Students will design a personalized keychain that will be cut on the Glowforge.

Objective

Students will learn

  • design process
  • design evaluation
  • how to save in different formats and why

Extension - Students create a luggage tag with full name and address

Thematic Questions:

  • How can we creatively use technology to design and produce a personalized keychain?
  • What do we need to know about formats to make what we need?

Outcomes

Students will...

  • Design a keychain for themselves
  • Save in a format that the Glowforge will understand

Standards:

ISTE Standards for Students

1.4 Innovative Designer– Students use a variety of technologies within a design process to identify and solve problems by creating new, useful or imaginative solutions.

  • 1.4 b Students select and use digital tools to plan and manage design process

Supplies

  • Acrylic or wood for keychains
  • 4” chains for keychains or 25 mm rings work also

Instructions for Google Classroom Assignment

  • Share Keychain Instructions with students
  • Share Keychain Example with students
  • Assign Keychain Template to students
  • Demonstrate to student how to start with the template and make it their own
  • Share examples that you have made
  • Allow students to create keychains
  • Students turn in using Google Classroom, making sure to convert to correct file format
  • Print from Google Drive or create a folder for each class

Tips

  • If using acrylic, select one color for everyone, or assign a color for each class
  • Cutting takes much less time than engraving, so I only allowed designs with cutting
  • The chains are available in large quantities on Amazon at a reasonable price

I teach this lesson to all fourth and fifth grade students in my Library Classes. We make keychains one year, and then luggage tags the next year
